British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
