Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
