The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
