Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
